The Zeigler Hotel
The Ziegler Hotel is a part of history in New Bern. The two story house was built in the 1920's and served as a residence for Mr. and Mrs. Ziegler. Mr.Zeigler was a watch repairman and his shop was in a garage behing their home. Their home was on the corner of Highway 17 and 8th Street. At the time Highway 17 was the main route from Main to Florida.
Shortly after World War Two broke out The Department of Defense decided to build a Marine Air Station in Havelock which is located about 17 miles South East of New Bern. At this time there were not many places to stay in the New Bern area so the Ziegler's started renting extra bedrooms in their house to Marines and DOD officials.
Sometime in the early 1950's Mr.Ziegler had back surgery and as a result of complications with the surgery he was permanently paralyzed. Needing extra income Mrs. Ziegler converted the Mr. Zieglers watch repair shop into two hotel rooms. Her success with renting those two motel rooms convinced her to add four more motel rooms. She eventually build two cottages and five more motel rooms. At the time, hotel rooms in Craven County were scarce and she kept had no trouble keeping all the rooms occupied. The fact that Highway 17 passed right by the from of the hotel also contributed to her success. Highway 17 was rerouted two blocks north of the hotel
By the mid 1950's the Ziegler Hotel was one of New Bern's premier place to stay. Anyone over 50 and born in New Bern NC will probably remember the large neon sign, shown on the left, that stood on the corner of Highway 17 and Eight Street. The sign attracted vehicles traveling on Highway 17 and guided them to the Ziegler Motel two blocks to the south. During the 1940s, '50s, and '60s, Highway 17 was the principle route on the East Coast for those heading North and South. The sign was removed in the late 1970's.
Mr. Zeigler passed away in the 1960's. Mrs. Zeigler lived in the house by herself and operated the Hotel until she passed away at age 101. Mrs.Ziegler was quite a gal and she had quite a few repeat customers.Folks loved the convenient location and the well kept rooms.
After Mrs. Ziegler passed away in the 1990's the hotel was sold and maintenance was neglected. The charming old hotel lost her luster and was quickly fading into the sunset. However the Ziegler Hotel was purchased in 2007 by the Tyson Group who are committed to once again making her one of New Bern's premier place to stay. The hotel was Remodeled Hotel Rooms, New Beds, Mini-Fridge/Freezer, Microwave, Coffee Pot, Wireless Internet, HDTV TV's, and 2 New Hotel Suites complete with full kitchens and stack washer/dryers.
