Historic Downtown New Bern
Real Estate with Real Charm

The Blades mansion is located on
Johnson Street in downtown New Bern.
This elaborate
Queen Anne House was designed by renowned architect Herbert
Simpson for lumber magnate William B. Blades. It combines
elements of Queen Anne and Greek Revival, making it one of
the most elegant mansions in New Bern.
Downtown New Bern is one of the finest
historic districts in the nation. Comprised of beautiful historic homes
dating back to the late 1700s and early 1800s, some are
incredible to say the least. There are the large and palatial ones with beautiful
garden areas; then there are the neat bungalows, perfectly manicured as well
as historic condos and town homes. Some areas of downtown are
multi-zoned, allowing for residential and commercial uses.
In several locations historic homes have been converted to small
shops on ground floors with living quarters on the second and third
floors. Other sections are strictly residential.
Downtown is alive with fashionable shops, upscale restaurants,
Tryon Palace, art shops, antiques, crafts and clothing shops,
gourmet coffee shops, several excellent civic
theatres, and more. And all are within walking distance! The
Neuse and Trent Rivers converge downtown, creating a picturesque
scenery of boats, fowl, and lazy fishermen. Stroll along the river walk and admire some of the
beautiful Hatteras Yachts which are made right here in New Bern, NC.

Ghent
|
A Classic
New Bern Neighborhood |
|
|
From stylish bungalows |
To stately mansions |
This is the
newest of New Bern's three historic districts. Admission to the National
Register occurred in 1983. Ghent contains private homes dating from
1913 to World War II. The area encompasses Spencer, Rhem, and parts
of Park Avenues. It began as a trolley car suburb in the days when
working folks wanted homes away from the hustle and bustle of
downtown New Bern. Having grown up in Ghent, I know this subdivision
quite well.
in this area quite well.
Today, Spencer Avenue, the main street in Ghent, is considered one
of the landmark streets in
New Bern, with old-fashioned street lamps positioned along a landscaped median
separating two lanes of traffic. In the 1920s and 1930s, a trolley
car ran where the median is now located, taking passengers
from one end of town to the other. Wouldn't it be great to see the
trolley be brought back to life. Large flowering fruit trees are
breathtakingly beautiful in April.
Ghent is an
energetic, people-oriented neighborhood where residents take to the
sidewalks whenever weather permits, which is quite often in New
Bern. In the 1960's and 1970's many families left the Ghent area and moved
out to the suburbs.
As a result the neighborhood started to decline and many homes in
Ghent fell into disrepair.
In recent years Ghent has become a
fashionable neighborhood for homeowners looking for a convenient
location and larger classic homes.
Bungalow and cottage-style homes with neat lawns make up a large
part of the Ghent neighborhood. Some homes feature antebellum column
fronts, and many have open or screened porches for inviting warm summer
evenings.
Ghent
is close to one of the area's nicest amenities, the new YMCA, which
includes a Jr. Olympic-sized swimming pool, a gymnasium, weight rooms
and a racquetball court. The "Y" also offers day care and
supervised exercise
classes. Gent is also fortunate to be situated between Fort Totten
Park, which has a baseball field with bleachers, swings and other
park equipment for children, and the larger
Lawson Creek Park, a popular fishing spot with nature trails, boat
launches, several soccer fields, and picnic tables. Both parks are within walking distance
of Ghent.
Halloween is a special treat for
those living in Ghent. Talk about
fun. I think half the folks in New Bern take their kids trick or
treating at Ghent as the
wide sidewalks and high porches make trick or treating fun again
even for adults.
Homes here are priced from $160,000-$300,000. Some have been
modernized but many will require some upgrading. So for the handy
man or woman this is a fine place to live. Ask my sister, she loves
it there.

DeGraffenried
Homes of Distinction in a southern setting
|
This
distinguished neighborhood lies one block north of the Ghent
Historical District .
Homes here are generally large and well-placed on spacious,
beautifully landscaped lots. DeGraffenreid was once New Bern's most
prestigious subdivision to live and a quick drive through
will explain why. Gorgeous dogwoods and
azaleas abound throughout the area and create a spectacular
fireworks of flora in the springtime.
Sidewalks invite
neighborhood walks and interaction with neighbors and streets carry names such as Queen Ann Lane
and Lucerne Way. Many of the more notable residences are stately two-story brick dwellings with dignified Federal features. Brick
walls and wrought-iron fences embellish many of the houses. Expect
to pay between $220,000 and $400,000 for
homes in this classy neighborhood.
As
with Ghent, DeGraffenfied is within walking distance of Fort Totten
Park and Lawson Creek Park. A short 5 minute bicycle trip will have
you in historic New Bern. I have many fond memories of Ghent and
DeGraffenfied and take it from me, both are great places to live.
|
Riverside

An old-style
neighborhood
with Timeless Appeal.
|
Riverside is also on the national
register of historic places. Riverside is comprised
of National Avenue and the areas east all the way to the Neuse River.
Riverside is located only a few blocks from downtown
New Bern and the many activities that occur in this
area.Development
of the Riverside subdivision began in the late 1890s in
response to the lumber industry. At one time the
lumber business flourished along the Neuse River in
the Riverside area. Logs were floated down the Neuse
River to the many lumber mills located in the area.
Riverside was
originally a mixed-use community of residential
buildings and commercial enterprises. People wanted
to live close to where they worked. The trolley car
in New Bern ran from the end of Spencer Avenue
through downtown and then on to Riverside.
In the 1960's as
many lumber mills closed and ceased to be
as economically important in New Bern,
many homes in the Riverside area fell into disrepair. The result was a neighborhood
in decline where beautifully refurbished homes and rundown buildings stood side-by-side.
Fortunately both the city
of New Bern and the Preservation Foundation took measures to restore this once handsome community to its original
glory. Many of Riverside's larger homes were built between 1896 and World War II, so there is a pleasant mix of architectural styles in the neighborhood. On National Avenue, high-peaked, two-story Victorian structures with wrap-around porches and plenty of shade trees are situated away from the road.
On the cross streets, perpendicular
to National Avenue and the Neuse River, are rows of tidy bungalows
such as the homes on the left and below.
Homes along the River Drive waterfront are of an entirely different
character. Here you will find pretty brick ranch dwellings on small
lots with plenty of trees and meticulous landscaping. Real estate
prices vary widely, with some of the older bungalows in the $150,000
up to the $500,000 for those on the Neuse River.
For those inclined to get their hands a little dirty. On
occasion you can find a fixer upper for $50,000 or so.
Give me a call if you want to see this classy
neighborhood. I am available most any day.

Trent Woods

|
Location-Location-Location
|
.jpg)
This mature neighborhood lies between New Bern and the Trent
River. One of New Bern's most desirable locations, it is only a few
minutes away from shopping and most of the amenities offered in
the area.
Trent Wood's is now an incorporated town. Although only a few miles from
historic downtown New Bern, Trent Woods was once considered to be out in the country
and other than a few scattered homes it consisted mostly of small
farms. Now its assorted neighborhoods contain some of the ritziest
homes in New Bern. Trent Woods is served by two Elementary Schools
and both are considered desirable.
Trent Wood's is comprised of numerous
neighborhoods that have developed since the 1960's. Manning Park, Holly Hills, Chelsea, Trent
Shores and Ward Point are on the Trent River. Others, such Creeks
Ends and Edgewood, are along Wilson's Creek. The three Haywood
Creek subdivisions line the banks of Haywood's Creek.
Many of the homes in Trent Woods are
large, with two and three stories, and usually have attached or
detached
two-car garages. Lots are mostly spacious, wooded and impeccably
landscaped, often with towering trees draped in Spanish moss. If you
drive through Trent Woods in the spring, you'll find a stunning display of flowering trees and shrubs.
In addition to the
New Bern Golf and Country Club, see my links
of interest, the area boasts other amenities such as the Eastern
Carolina Yacht Club. Real estate prices in Trent Woods start around
$200,000. Waterfront houses range from $550,000 for creek-front
properties to well in excess of $1
million for waterfront.
|
Haywood
Creek

The Haywood creek area is comprised of 3
neighborhoods with homes that sell from $175,000-$800,000.
Some of the homes in this area are in the city of New Bern
and others are in Trent Woods.
Within walking distance are Ben Quinn
Elementary School and New Bern High School. Also within a
few miles are shopping centers, Community College, and 3
golf courses.
The picturesque Haywood Creek, shown below,
runs along the backside of the 3 neighborhoods and connects
to the Trent River.

A neighborhood with
just about everything! |
River Bend lies along the north shore
of the Trent River and is about six
miles from the center of New Bern. Many of the home sites here have water frontage and private boat slips
and are among the most affordable waterfront homes in the area. For those not on the water there is an
affordable private marina and boat launch in Riverbend that makes
the river accessible to all property owners.

Riverbend has a exceptional golf
course that is very affordable. Click Here for information on the rates. The club
includes a well-stocked pro shop, a restaurant, an outdoor
swimming pool and four lighted tennis courts. Combine this with a
active tennis club, miles of roads friendly for walking-running, and you have a
little town that offers something for everyone.
A large number of
retirees find River Bend attractive however the area also has a
large number of young working families as well. Although
began as a subdivision, River Bend was incorporated in 1980
so it could better serve the residents there. The
town municipal building,
finished in 1986, has a 99-seat meeting hall and is adjacent to a
small park with a children's play area, baseball field and small
community dock. For tax information click here
Consisting mainly of single-family dwellings,
most with attached or detached one- and two-car garages. In recent
years, clusters of townhouses and duplexes were added to the
community. Prices range from about $100,000 for a non-waterfront
townhouse to $600,000 for a home on the
Trent River. For more information on Riverbend click below.
Riverbend
Located off Highway 17 just
before you get to Riverbend Deerfield offers
affordable homes in a very convenient location.
Also one of the best elementary schools in the
county is within one mile.
Only a couple of minutes from
the Riverbend Golf Course, tennis courts, and
a new marina, Deer field subdivision was
developed in the early
1990's so the homes have many of the amenities
that buyers expect today. The winding roads keep
the traffic speed down and allows for safe walking
and biking.
Home prices in Deerfield
range from $210,000-$260,000. Call the Tyson
Group today to learn more about this well kept
subdivision
Hidden Oaks is located across
Highway 17 from Riverbend. Hidden Oaks is one of
the few newer subdivisions where you will find
lots in excess of one acre and many are over 2.5
acres. This is appealing to those needing their privacy
but want to be within 10 minutes of New
Bern. Ben Quinn Elementary School and New Bern
High School are only a few miles away. Home prices range from
$200,000-$270,000. If you need your space this
might be a good choice of neighborhoods for you.

Fairfield Harbour
Boating-fishing-Golfing-Tennis-biking
|

This expansive, gated community is located across the Neuse
River about 15 minutes from
downtown New Bern. Fairfield Harbour is a 3,000-acre resort
development featuring waterfront, golf course, and interior homes.
Northwest Creek flows through the back side of Fairfield Harbour
allowing for the option of having a home or home site on a natural
waterway. Northwest Creek is deep enough for larger boats
and is a naturally protected harbour. The Fairfield Harbour canal system
provides hundreds of homes and home sites with protected deep water access
to the mighty Neuse River. Sailors and motor boaters love this neighborhood
because of its easy access to the Neuse River and the Intra-coastal Waterway.
Fairfield Harbour has 4 marinas with over 450 slips, one indoor and two outdoor pools, nine tennis
courts, four of which are lighted.
Golfers also find
Fairfield Harbour an attractive place to call home. The Harbor Pointe golf
course is both challenging and fun. Tennis, walking, fishing, bicycling are
other ways to have fun and stay in shape.
Fairfield Harbour is unusual in that it is a combination of mostly
single-family homes, with some condominiums, townhouses and timeshare condos
added for good measure. In general, home
prices start in the $175,000 and go up to about $550,000,
depending upon proximity to the water. Home sites are among the most
reasonable in the area and many folks choose to buy a lot and build their
own home.
Condominiums and townhouses at Fairfield Harbour are arranged around
small man-made lakes within the community. Winding paths and roads connect
all locations, and the combination of layout and landscaping gives a feeling
of privacy.
To me what makes Fairfield Harbour such a great neighborhood
to live in is the incredible amount of clubs and
organizations within the community.
The
Harbour's combination of year-round residents and
vacationers requires that a wide variety of activities be
readily available. Established community activities are too
numerous to list but include such interests as men's and
women's golf associations, a chorus, quilting, weaving,
swimnastics, gardening, drama, book, bridge, RV, tennis and
yacht clubs. Fairfield Harbour
residents contribute more than any other community to the
non profit organizations in the New Bern area.
Call
Fairfield Harbour expert, yours truly, for additional
information. My uncle
was the original developer of Fairfield Harbour over 35 years ago and I have been
selling homes here since 1978.

Greenbrier

Golf-Tennis-Convenient to everything

Greenbrier
is an upscale 700 home subdivision conveniently located in the
center of New Bern adjacent to Craven Community College. Greenbrier is a
neighborhood well suited for both families with young children and
retirees. Home sites range from an eighth of an acre to more than a full
acre. Excellent architectural planning has effectively blended a
variety of home styles into a delightful community. I built the
first home in Greenbrier in 1986, so I am very familiar with this
community.
Greenbrier is built out so there if you want a home here you will
have to buy an existing home. There is a wide Varity of homes available from
1250 square foot cluster homes to 4000 square foot custom built homes.
Prices range from $210,000-$500,000.
The
entire development surrounds an 18-hole championship golf course,
see links of interest,
designed by renowned golf course architect Rees Jones. The
Emerald Golf Club in Greenbrier was home to the annual Curtis Strange Shrine
Tournament from 1990-2000. In September 2000, Tiger Woods and Justin Leonard played
alongside Curtis Strange in this annual fundraising golf tournament.
Tiger shot a 9 under 63 the first time he played the course. At 7000
yards from the back tees he made the game look short and easy.
The country club includes an Olympic-sized, Z-shaped pool and four
lighted tennis courts. Golf club members can sharpen their skills on one of
the finest practice facilities in the area. From Greenbrier's front
gate, you are within five minutes of major shopping, five minutes from local
schools, Craven Regional Hospital and most doctor facilities, and 10 minutes
from East Carolina Regional Jetport. How convenient than that.
Come visit New Bern and I will show you why Greenbrier is one of the area's most desirable
locations. Click below for more info on Greenbrier.

Taberna
A touch of class

One Of New Bern's finest communities
|
Taberna is one of the newer upscale communities in the area.
Developed by Weyerhaeuser, this community is about 5 miles east of
downtown New Bern on US 70 East and 25 miles West of Atlantic
Beach.
Taberna means "place of
hospitality" and was actually the original name of Bern,
Switzerland, New Bern's sister city. Residences at the 1,100-acre golfing community include
mostly single family homes with patio homes and golf villas scattered throughout.
This community is attractive for working professionals as well as retirees.
The golf course is considered one of the best in the area. See
my links of interest for more info on the golf course. Taberna
has a full-service clubhouse with pro shop, restaurant, and lounge,
tennis courts, and swimming pool.
Features of the community include rolling hills, dense foliage,
lakes, streams and wetlands, along with pedestrian trails. A canoe
dock leads to the beautiful Brices Creek which meanders for miles
into the Croatan National Forrest. Real estate prices range from $220,000
for a 2000 single family home on a small lot to $550,000
for 4000 square feet on the golf course.
For history buffs, a Civil War battlefield located
within Taberna. See my history links of interest for more in
on the Battle of New Bern.
Located about half way between New Bern and Havelock, Neuse Harbour
has large spacious lots and both traditional and contemporary homes.
The homes on the river offer incredible panoramic views of the Neuse
River.
Neuse Harbour was started in the early 1990's and is
mostly built out, however there are still has a
few lots available for those that prefer to build a new home. Neuse
Harbour seems to be a good choose for those that want to be a little
further out of town, or for those that work at Cherry Point Marine Air
Station. Only about 20-25 minutes from the ocean Neuse Harbour also
appeals for those that enjoy salt water fishing.
Existing home prices start around $240,000. Some of the larger homes
on the Neuse River go for over $1 million. There is a home for
everyone in Neuse Harbour.
This is one of the nicest mature subdivisions in New Bern.
Located
adjacent to Trent Woods and just minutes from the downtown historic
district Old Towne is convenient to the shopping centers on Highway 17. Olde Towne
Harbour offers quiet seclusion in a lovely, natural setting. when I
was a kid Old Town was called J.C. Park, owned by the local Junior
Civitans who let area kids use the water access on the Trent River.
In addition to reasonable priced interior homes Old Towne offers homes and condominiums that front the Trent
River allowing owners water access and beautiful views. Many of the
homes in this subdivision are on the man made harbour that was created when
a canal was cut in
from the Trent River. These homes also have deep protected water allowing
you to keep a large boat in your back yard. From your back door you can boat
to downtown New Bern in a matter of a few minutes.
Homes prices range from $275,000 for an interior home to $800,000 for one
of the larger homes located on the canal or harbour. As with many of the
other communities in New Bern this subdivision appeals to working professionals as
well as retirees.

Forest
Hills
Exquisite
in the Spring |

Forrest Hills is almost an enchanted area at
least in my opinion. But perhaps I am more than a
little prejudice. My folks built the second house in
Forest Hills in the early 60's. At that time Forest
Hills was not even in New Bern's city limits. It was
great growing up there as a boy with his dog and a bb
gun was all I needed to keep me happy..
Located just a few blocks from Craven Regional Hospital Forest Hills is
arguably as convenient a location as any area in New Bern.
Here you will find homes built from the early 60's to the late 60's. The
lots are larger, around 1/2 acre, and the mature yards explode in
breathtaking views during the spring as the azaleas and dogwoods show their
incredible, albeit short lived, splendor. There are quite a few pecan trees in
Forest Hills and as a kid I would get $1 for a large paper grocery bag full.
Seemed like a lot of money back then.
You will find exceptional, in my opinion, real estate values here. Often
you can get 2000-2200 square feet for under $200,000. Yes the homes are
older, but many have been updated. Please let me show you this subdivision,
I enjoy just riding through Forrest Hills and I bet you will as well.

Lake Clermont
A convenient and affordable choice |

This delightfully
convenient subdivision is located just
minutes from downtown New Bern, but is not
in the city limits. Lake
Clermont is a large 55 acre man made lake with around
65 homes carefully woven around and on the
lake.
Located close to both New Bern and
Havelock it a good choice for both retirees
and working families. Lake Clermont is
located in the much sought after
Brinson Elementary School.
Also located close by are the Croatan
National Forrest and the Brice's Creek
boat launch. Mid town and downtown New Bern is a 7 minute drive.
Interior
home prices start around $235,000.00 and
lakefront homes start around $375,000.00.
Home prices are generally considered reasonable for this desirable subdivision.
|
Brice's Creek
Enchanted
Forest and Deep Waters |
The Brice's Creek
area lies on the south side of the Trent River. The area is bordered
by the 150,000 acre Croatan National Forest and the enchanting Brices Creek. Brices
Creek is a long, deep, creek that begins in the Croatan
Forrest and flows through Carolina Colors and Taberna before making
its way into the Trent River. From the mouth of Brices Creek it is
about 1.5 miles to downtown New Bern. By car it takes about 10-15
minutes to get to shopping in New Bern.
Over the past 25
years this area has been one of the most popular
areas in Craven County for younger families. Large lots, excellent elementary
school, reasonable home prices, and accessible water are just some
of the reason why. The hub of this area is Merchant's store, a local
country store that carries just about everything under the sun. Here
you can catch up on all the local gossip, buy your fishing worms, or
order a cheeseburger.
A number of
subdivisions exist in Brices Creek, including, Snug Harbor, Oakview,
Deer Run, River Trace, Rock Creek, and Hunter's Ridge. This area is growing rapidly because of its quick
commute to downtown New Bern and easy access to Highway 70 E. There
are also a number of creek front and riverfront homes, most with
deep water, in Brice's Creek.
You can't go
wrong buying a home in this area. Home prices off the water range
from $215,000-$450,000. Creek front homes starts around $400,000. My
wife and I live in this area and are familiar with the many
different neighborhoods.
Tucker CreekGateway to Havelock
|
Tucker Creek is located about one mile from the back gate of Cherry Point Marine Air Station making it a popular area for military families and civilian employees. Tucker Creek is accessible by a community boat launch which enables you launch a small power boat and make your way to the Neuse River. There are a limited amount of homes in Tucker Creek that have enough water depth to allow for a dock to accommodate a small motor boat.
Tucker Creek Middle School is Craven Counties newest middle school and is located within the subdivision which makes it convenient for those with middle school aged children. Tucker creek is one of Havelock's highest quality subdivisions.
Home prices range from $135,000.00 for a 1400 sq.ft. town home to $300,000.00 for a single family home on the creek.
Call the Tyson Group today to learn
more about what makes Tucker Creek a great place to
live.

Berne Glade is a quiet subdivision located in
a very convenient location. Another subdivision
located in the James City area Berne Glade is 2
blocks from the Taberna Golf Course, 3 blocks
from the popular Creekside Park, And less than 1
mile from Creekside Elementary School and
Brinson Elementary School. Historic downtown New
Bern is about 7 minutes away and the back gate
of Cherry Point Marine Air Station is about 15
minutes from here.
Most of the homes here are relatively new and
were built on lots that are larger than many of
the new subdivisions. Home prices range from
$220,000-$260,000. A really quality neighborhood
in a quite and convenient area. You cannot go
wrong in Bern Glade.

Another nice subdivision located in James City that is close to
Cherry Point and Havelock and New Bern. Here you will find larger
lots, nearly 1/2 acre and well designed 3 and 4 bedroom homes which
appeals to young growing families. Combine this with an excellent
school system and you have a winning combination.
Home prices will range from $185,000-$250,000.
Call the Tyson Group today and we will schedule an

The Home Place
Large
lots and Beautiful homes |
The Home Place is one of the last subdivisions in
the area to offer spacious lots, one to four acres, and large
elegant homes, many of which are over 2500 heated square feet.
Located
about one mile past Brices Creek, it is a relatively quick commute
to Cherry Point Marine Air Station or to downtown New Bern
yet at
the same time it is far enough away from the hustle and bustle to get the
feel for living in the country. Deer, squirrel, and other wildlife
are abundant in this area as it is adjacent to the Croatan National
Forest and Island Creek nature walk. Located outside of any
municipalities all you pay are county taxes which
currently .61 per hundred of valuation. County water is available to
the Home Place but you must have a septic tank as public sewer is
not available. This subdivision is also located in the desirable Brinson
Memorial elementary school district which makes it attractive to
couples with elementary school age children.

What ever your motivation, whether you just want a
large lot with plenty of space between you and your neighbor, or if
you are just a country person at heart, the Home Place has a home
for you. Real estate prices start around $250000.00 and will go up
to $450000.00. I have always felt you get a lot of home for your
money in this subdivision.

Trolley Run is such a popular
neighborhood that it is rare to find a house for
sale. If one becomes available you better snap it up
quick.
In the early 1920's an
electric trolley car ran from the Riverside area
through downtown New Bern and on to the end of
Spencer Avenue. The medium of Spencer Avenue is
where the trolley track once ran. Hence the name
Trolley Run.
Central to mid town shopping and
downtown restaurants Trolley Run is affordable,
convenient, and well kept. As an extra bonus is the
YMCA is one block away, and the sidewalks of Spencer
and Rhem Avenue offer walkers and bikers a safe way
to get their workout.
Home prices range from
$155,000-$255000.
